This chatbot integrates Google Gemini’s powerful conversational AI through a custom-built web interface, designed to offer instant assistance and a seamless user experience

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Project Overview

Our mission was to create a lightweight, embeddable chatbot as a SaaS product that any business could host and run independently. This chatbot needed to provide:

Real-time conversational responses
Seamless integration with OpenAI/Gemini APIs
A clean, brandable interface
Device responsiveness and fast performance
Error handling and a natural “typing” experience

Unlike off-the-shelf chatbot widgets, our product was designed to be fully customizable, self-hosted, and subscription-free—targeting startups, agencies, and enterprise users who want AI chat capabilities without the lock-in.

The Problem

Building an AI chatbot may sound straightforward—but integrating it as a SaaS-ready, developer-friendly solution posed several unique technical and user experience challenges:

Secure API Communication

Google Gemini requires secure HTTPS calls. Hosting environments with incomplete cURL configurations often fail silently or reject SSL certificates.
We had to solve the issue of SSL verification without assuming users’ servers were pre-configured.

Structured API Messaging

Gemini expects carefully structured JSON payloads and returns complex, nested responses. Extracting clean, displayable messages from the Gemini response was critical.

Token Efficiency & Model Behavior

Managing prompt and response token counts was important to ensure performance and cost efficiency. Incorrect token usage can affect the relevance of AI replies.

Responsive, Native UX

We needed the chatbot to work out-of-the-box on all devices, with no frameworks or external libraries, while still supporting animations, auto-scroll, Enter key handling, and “typing…” simulations.

Human-Like Flow

Creating the illusion of a real conversation meant implementing a non-blocking typing animation, response delays, and instant scroll synchronization.

Fail Gracefully

The chatbot needed to handle API failures, slow responses, or invalid user input elegantly without breaking the UI.

CHALLENGES WE HAD

The Solution

Silver WebBuzz’s development team engineered a complete, self-contained chatbot solution that solved these issues head-on.

Backend with PHP & Gemini API

Built a robust chat-gemini.php file that securely receives user prompts and forwards them to the Gemini API. Integrated cacert.pem into the PHP cURL stack to ensure compatibility with HTTPS certificates, even on misconfigured servers.Parsed JSON responses cleanly, extracting the highest-confidence candidate response.

Frontend UX with HTML/CSS/JSA

Designed an elegant, mobile-responsive chat widget using only HTML and CSS—no external libraries. Implemented natural scrolling, animated “typing…” indicators, and seamless reply rendering with JavaScript. Added Enter key and Shift+Enter support for natural multi-line text input and submission behavior.

Error Handling & Stability

Wrapped API calls in try/catch logic with fallback responses. Displayed clear error messages in the UI if anything failed

Lightweight & Host-Ready

The final product can be embedded via iframe or script, or deployed as part of any PHP website. No third-party hosting or plugins required—ideal for SaaS reselling, WordPress integration, or agency clients.
